Who can use this feature?
Available on Enterprise plan with Advanced Security Controls enabled.
Enabled by Owners and Admins on Web App. Accessible to All members once enabled.
Enterprise customers on a HIPAA or PHIPA plan can now receive their faxes as email attachments again - with the fax delivered securely over an encrypted connection.
Overview
When Advanced Security Controls (ASC) are active, fax email notifications contain only a notification message by default, without the faxed file. With Fax-to-Email for HIPAA & PHIPA accounts, your received and sent fax notifications can include the fax as an attachment again.
To keep your protected health information (PHI) secure, emails with attachments are only sent over TLS 1.2 encrypted connections, from notifications@tls.fax.plus.
Nothing changes until you opt in. The default for ASC accounts stays notify-only. Attachments are only sent once an admin enables the feature for your organization and each user turns attachments on in their own settings. Accounts without ASC are not affected.
Requirements
- An Enterprise plan with Advanced Security Controls (ASC) activated.
- A signed Business Associate Agreement (BAA) for HIPAA, or a PHIPA Service Provider Agreement (SPA) for PHIPA.
- A recipient mail server that supports TLS 1.2. If it doesn't, no email is sent.
Step 1: Enable fax attachments for your organization (Owners and Admins)
An admin enables this feature once for the whole organization by accepting the ASC consent.
- Log in to your Fax.Plus account, and go to the Settings section on your dashboard.
- Under the tab for Faxing, find the box for Notification and click on Edit.
- Click on Modify located next to Email.
- For Received Fax Notification and/or Sent Fax Notification, select On (notify and attach fax to message).
- Read the consent statement and tick the box to accept it on behalf of your organization, consistent with your Business Associate Agreement with Alohi.
- Click on Confirm.
- A confirmation message appears: Attachments enabled for your notifications. We recommend clicking Send Test Email to check that delivery works, then click Done.
Once the consent is accepted, all admins and members in your organization can turn on fax attachments for themselves.
Didn't receive the test email? Your mail server may not support TLS 1.2. Ask your IT team to check your mail server's TLS settings and to add notifications@tls.fax.plus to your organization's allow list.
Step 2: Turn on fax attachments (All members)
After an admin has enabled the feature, each user chooses whether to receive faxes as attachments in their own settings:
- Log in to your Fax.Plus account, and go to the Settings section on your dashboard.
- Under the tab for Faxing, find the box for Notification and click on Edit.
- Click on Modify located next to Email.
- For Received Fax Notification and/or Sent Fax Notification, select On (notify and attach fax to message). A message confirms that Advanced Security Controls are in place for your organization.
- Click on Confirm.
Who is responsible for the faxes once delivered?
Fax.Plus delivers your fax attachments only over TLS 1.2 encrypted connections. Once an email is delivered, HIPAA safeguards and PHI custody on the recipient's mail infrastructure are the responsibility of your organization, as set out in your Business Associate Agreement with Alohi.

Frequently asked questions
Will anything change for my team automatically?
No. ASC accounts stay notify-only by default. Fax attachments are only sent after an admin accepts the ASC consent and a user turns attachments on in their own settings.
What happens if my mail server doesn't support TLS 1.2?
No email is sent. Your fax is still available in your encrypted Fax.Plus archive. Ask your IT team to Its TLS 1.2 and above on your mail server, then send a test email to confirm delivery.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Fax-to-Email works with your existing email client.
Are my faxes still stored in Fax.Plus?
Yes. Your faxes remain in your fully encrypted Fax.Plus archive, where you can search and manage them from your Inbox and Sent tabs.
Who can enable the feature for our organization?
Account Owners and Admins. Once an admin has accepted the ASC consent, other admins and members can turn attachments on for themselves.
I turned on attachments, but I'm not receiving the emails. What should I check?
- Make sure your mail server supports TLS 1.2.
- Ask your IT team to add notifications@tls.fax.plus to your allow list.
- Check your spam or quarantine folders.
