Sending documents with QES: what happens for each signer?

When using Sign.Plus to send documents requiring Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES), it’s important to understand how the process works for all signers, regardless of their country of residence.

What happens when you choose QES?

When you select QES as the signature level, each signer, regardless of their location (e.g., US, EU, etc.), is redirected to our Qualified Trust Service Provider (QTSP), Swisscom, to complete identity verification.

This process ensures that:

  • The signature complies with eIDAS standards (for EU citizens) or ZertES (for Swiss citizens) and meets high-assurance requirements.
  • All signers, including non-EU individuals, go through the same identity verification and QES process.

Who receives the QES stamp?

After the document has been signed and completed by all parties, the sender can download a Certificate that includes:

  • A QES signature stamp for each verified signer.
  • Timestamp and legal signature details issued by Swisscom.

Signers do not receive the signature certificate or QES stamp directly with the document they sign. However, their signature is still fully compliant and part of the verified QES workflow.

Do I need QES tokens?

Yes. To use QES, you’ll need to purchase QES tokens in advance. Each QES token corresponds to one identity verification and signature by one signer.
